The main reason for a dyslexia referral is underachievement. Your child may be underachieving in the classroom, despite verbally demonstrating good understanding. The difficulties a dyslexic student may experience in the classroom can cause damage to self-esteem. If a child is dyslexic it is important that they know, as this reassures them that there is a reason for their difficulty and it isn’t a reflection of their intelligence.
Assessments are the first step to helping dyslexic students reach their potential.
Although it is possible to get an assessment through school in theory, it may be very difficult in practice. Educational
Psychologists often have long waiting lists and it can even be a challenge convincing some schools that there is a need for an assessment in the first place- especially considering that dyslexia is a spectrum and every child on that spectrum is different.
Here at Yorkshire Dyslexia, we understand the frustration parents may feel if schools don’t immediately recognise the signs of dyslexia. We are also aware that some students develop very good ‘coping’ strategies and so dyslexic traits may not show until later in a child’s school career when the work becomes harder. We feel it is very important to listen to parents’ concerns in order to gain a full picture of the child and the difficulties they are experiencing. We also recognise the importance of parents working alongside school in meeting the learning needs of a dyslexic child. The results of a dyslexia assessment/report offer advice and guidance to parents and teachers.
Having a private assessment ensures your child is assessed quickly which means they will get the specialist help, teaching and support they require sooner. We are passionate about helping to unlock the key to a child’s learning and it often comes as a huge relief to parents and children to understand that they are dyslexic. We, like you, are committed to helping make a difference to the life chances of individuals with dyslexia and this journey begins with the step of having an assessment.
Assessments for Children
About the Assessment
-
We assess in the comfort of your own home and would simply ask for a quiet uninterrupted space where your child has access to a table/chair. You are welcome to be present during the assessment if you desire but some children prefer not to be observed by parents!
-
We offer daytime, evening or weekend appointments to suit your needs (please note the latest evening appointment needs to begin by 5pm)
-
A comprehensive assessment involves assessment of your child’s intelligence, phonological awareness, handwriting and memory. Standardised tests are used - these compare the individual with others of the same age.
-
The assessment lasts 2-3 hours.
-
The results are then carefully analysed and a comprehensive report is written and sent to you within 2-3 weeks. The report will outline your child’s relative strengths and weaknesses and whether they have a Specific Learning difficulty commonly known as dyslexia.
-
The report will provide guidance for teachers and parents and will recommend strategies of appropriate intervention.
-
The report will be recognised by schools, examination boards, universities and employers and follows the BDA criteria.
-
As we are a new organisation, our waiting list is relatively small, which is a definite bonus when a child needs an assessment and needs one quickly.
